5 Ways The iPhone 5 Will Affect eLearning

See on Scoop.it - Education Futures

Since the first iPhone came out in 2007, Apple releases have been characterized by camp outs, long lines, and controversial ads by competitors. The recent release of the iPhone 5 is no different.

The world of learning objectives and MOOCs may not have much in common with Retina displays and 4G networks, but elearning professionals stand to gain from adopting some of Apple’s design and function principles. If Apple can take something as clunky and unsexy as the original mobile phones (90’s flashback warning) and turn it into a sleek aspirational purchase, there may still be hope for those of us who still cling to PowerPoint as our primary elearning content creation platform. With that, here are 5 things eLearning developers and teachers can learn from the iPhone 5.

Electronic Implant Dissolves in the Body

See on Scoop.it - Healthcare Professionals

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Tufts University, and others have created fully biodegradable electronics that could allow doctors to implant medical sensors or drug delivery devices that dissolve when they’re no longer needed. The transient circuits, described in today’s issue of Science, can be programmed to disappear after a set amount of time based on the durability of their silk-protein coating.

Sorry, Marketers, You're Doing Facebook Wrong

See on Scoop.it - Business Futures

Marketers aren’t posting enough on Facebook on the weekends and at night, according to a new report from Buddy Media.

If you’re looking to take a day off from posting on Facebook, choose Wednesday, but don’t rest on Sunday or you’ll miss the best opportunity of the week. That’s the advice from Buddy Media‘s “Strategies for Effective Wall Posts: A Timeline Analysis,” a report based on activity from 1,800 of the world’s biggest brand pages from April 1 to May 31.

As with previous Buddy Media reports on the subject, the analysis found that marketers are still posting too little on weekends and at night and when they do post, they’re way too verbose.

Underground Supermodels

See on Scoop.it - Healthcare Professionals

Naked mole-rats, unlike other mammals, tolerate variable body temperatures, attributed to their lack of an insulatory layer of fur. Their pink skin is hairless except for sparse, whisker-like strands that crisscross the body to form a sensitive sensory array that helps them navigate in the dark. Both the naked mole-rat’s skin and its upper respiratory tract are completely insensitive to chemical irritants such as acids and capsaicin, the spicy ingredient in chili peppers. Most surprisingly, they can survive periods of oxygen deprivation that would cause irreversible brain damage in other mammals, and they are also resistant to a broad spectrum of other stressors, such as the plant toxins and heavy metals found in the soils in which they live. Unlike other mammals, they never get cancer, and this maintenance of genomic integrity, even as elderly mole-rats, most likely contributes to their extraordinarily long life span. In contrast to similar-size mice that only live 2–4 years, naked mole-rats can survive and thrive, maintaining normal function and reproduction, into their 30s.

Botswana Doctors Stop Cervical Cancer With A Vinegar Swab

See on Scoop.it - Healthcare Professionals

Women with HIV have a high risk of getting cervical cancer, but the traditional screening method for the disease — a pap smear — isn’t available in many poor countries.

Ricky Lu, an obstetrician-gynecologist with the international health group Jhpiego, is promoting a cervical cancer screening technique in which a nurse or a midwife simply swabs a woman’s cervix with vinegar (or diluted acetic acid) and then looks with the naked eye, or a magnifying glass, for pre-cancerous lesions. The screening technique requires only vaginal spoons, vinegar and a bit of training. It can be performed in the simplest health clinics without a need for laboratory tests or even electricity.

In the developing world, Lu says, public health providers need a cervical cancer screening tool that is fast, easy and inexpensive. “We need a test that is simple, practical and good enough to identify precancerous lesions,” he says. “And then also it’s critical that it is available where women come [for health care].”

Sperm Tracked in 3-D—A First

See on Scoop.it - Healthcare Professionals

For the first time, scientists have successfully plotted the paths of sperm in 3-D, revealing corkscrew-like trajectories and “hyperactive” swimmers.

Based on a sensor chip not unlike those in smartphones and digital cameras, the new technology could lead to better male fertility testing and insights into the behavior of other microorganisms, researchers say.

Tiny and fast—even for microorganisms—human sperm are notoriously difficult to study. Nevertheless the team trained their tool on the male reproductive cells rather than easier quarry. Why? Because “sperm is one of the most important microorganisms in life,” study leader Aydogan Ozcan said.

Professor awarded $800,000 grant for autism therapy research, including ‘virtual mirror’

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Professionals

UK professor Sen-Ching Cheung recently received an $800,000 grant for his autism therapy research from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

The concept of ‘self’ is an important area in autism research. Children with autism typically lack interest in social interactions, but appear to be highly interested in their own image in mirrors and others imitating their actions. Under this new grant, we will be developing new software and hardware systems that can provide unprecedented capability in creating novel behaviors of self in both traditional visual medium and novel immersive devices, including the ‘virtual mirror.’”Sen-Ching (Samson) Cheung received a four-year grant, totaling nearly $800,000, for his autism therapy research.

In the virtual mirror, a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) will be able to look at himself in a large computer display. As he is looking at himself, the program will take his image and virtually create the child carrying out the very actions he needs to learn (speaking, sitting still, social interactions with others, etc.). Through seeing the instant visual feedback from the virtual mirror, Cheung hopes that this new technology can help autistic children better concentrate on behavioral learning and generalizing abstract concepts to daily life.

One man's DIY lending library

See on Scoop.it - Education Futures

Nanie Guanlao has been running an informal library in Manila for 12 years - and he’s determined to share his books with as many people as possible.

The idea is simple. Readers can take as many books as they want, for as long as they want - even permanently. As Guanlao says: “The only rule is that there are no rules.”

It’s a policy you might assume would end very quickly - with Guanlao having no books at all.

But in fact, in the 12 years he’s been running his library - or, in his words, his book club - he’s found that his collection has grown rather than diminished, as more and more people donate to the cause.

Scientists See Upside And Downside Of Sequencing Their Own Genes : NPR

See on Scoop.it - Healthcare Professionals

Prominent geneticists are getting their own genomes decoded, revealing the benefits and risks.

When scientists were looking for the first person to test a new, superfast way of deciphering someone’s entire genetic blueprint, they turned to James Watson – the guy who shared a Nobel Prize for discovering the structure of DNA.

“They had to sequence someone, so they got me,” he says.

The results helped solve a mystery: Watson had never understood why he had so much trouble controlling his blood pressure with beta blockers. “They put me to sleep,” he says.

The sequencing revealed that he had genes that made him more sensitive than most people to the drugs. “Now I can take them once a week,” he says, “so my blood pressure is better controlled now because of my genome.”

A Lesson in Empathy … from Dogs

In short, the evidence revealed that, in an experiment conducted by the college, dogs approached those people who appeared to be distressed more often than the others and acted submissively with these individuals.

What You Can Learn from Celebrities About Social Media

See on Scoop.it - Business Futures

In the time it takes to say “verified,” a celebrity can get millions of followers on social media without putting in much effort. But, even though their fame hooks a lot of followers, business owners can learn from celebrities when it comes to managing social media.

As the owner of a company that manages social media for several celebrities, I can see two main reasons why people love to follow and engage with celebrities over social media. It humanizes the typically unreachable mega star, and for the chance of acknowledgment — being retweeted or receiving a reply over Facebook from a famous person can make a fan’s day.

What does this mean for the business owner who is building his or her social media presence? Here are three basic principles that you can apply to your social media accounts.

Startup Thinks Real Sex Can Sell

See on Scoop.it - Healthcare Professionals

Entrepreneur Cindy Gallop laments today’s selection of Internet porn. Her startup seeks to make “real-life porn” a socially acceptable staple.

In 2009, Gallop gave a TED Talk explaining a phenomenon she’s experienced dating men in their twenties. Gallop, now 52, says Internet porn has become de-facto sex education, teaching young men that “real sex” should look like the sex they see performed by professional actors (her TED Talk includes graphic examples of the behaviors she’s encountered). Gallop isn’t anti-pornography, admitting to Mashable that she “loves porn” and “thinks it’s great,” but she believes there’s a fundamental issue with porn as default sex education. Though porn existed before the Internet, Gallop says porn has achieved unprecedented accessibility through the Internet.

Whooping Cough Vaccine's Protection Fades Quickly

See on Scoop.it - Healthcare Professionals

To protect children against whooping cough, doctors recommend five shots of vaccine before they turn 7.

But what happens after that? How long does the protection last?

Researchers at the Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Study Center checked it out. They compared 277 kids who came down with whooping cough, or pertussis, to more than 3,000 children who tested negative for it. Another comparison group consisted of more than 6,000 kids who were close matches to the sick kids on a bunch of factors, including sex, age and race.

The key finding: The protection from the vaccine drops by 42 percent each year after the fifth shot. So kids who got all their shots on time could become quite susceptible to whooping cough again between ages 8 and 11.
