Sustainable development of China's electronic information industry: Green challenges and solutions

China’s electronic information industry has quickly become an essential part of the country’s national economy. However, pollution and environmental challenges emerge at different stages throughout the lifecycle of information and communication technology (ICT) products, from their design, development, manufacturing to use and disposal. Evidence shows that little effort has been made to address these challenges and environmental issues have not received much attention from industrial manufacturers or the users of ICT products. This paper discusses and highlights the importance and impacts of current environmental challenges faced by the electronic information industry in China. It proposes the implementation of green ICT as a key strategy to ensure environmentally friendly use of ICT equipment to maintain sustainable development of this industry in the long-term.
