Albert Espinosa insists that his gruelling, 10-year battle against cancer was a happy time.

The book, which is being published for the first time in the UK, details the discoveries he made during his illness – including how to stay in touch with your inner 14-year-old, or contemplate your own death – which he believes can apply to life outside hospitals. The tone veers from humorous to just plain odd; one chapter is dedicated to the delights of “positive wanking” (proving perhaps that it is possible to be too in touch with your inner 14-year-old). A word-of-mouth sensation, it has sold more than a million copies and been published in 20 other countries.

Max Little, who gave the recent talk “A test for Parkinson’s with a phone call,” let us know that the Parkinson’s Voice Initiative has reached its goal of collecting 100,000 voice samples — which they needed to ensure the accuracy of their over-the-phone test for the disease. “It’s probably the fastest ever, large-scale Parkinson’s study,” Max tells us, adding that interested parties can keep calling. “The more data we get the better.”

A change in vaccine composition may partly explain current whooping cough outbreaks in the United States and Australia, researchers say.

In the 1990s, a switch was made from diphtheria-tetanus-whole cell pertussis (DTwP) vaccine to diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTaP) vaccine to reduce side effects. It’s possible that the newer vaccine is less effective and wears off faster, Australian researchers suggest.
