Talkative children do better at preschool

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Professionals

Hyperactive children who cannot stop talking in class are likely to do better at preschool because they get more attention from their teachers, a study has suggested.

Parents of young children hope for a successful kindergarten experience that will set their youngsters on the right path of their educational journey.

Some worry about their kids not adapting to the school environment, particularly when the children are talkative and overactive.

Yet, a new study by the University of Miami in the US shows that overly shy preschool children are at greater academic risk than their chatty and boisterous peers.

The study is one of the first to follow the social and academic progress of children throughout the preschool year.

Quora has emerged as a promising foil to crappy Q&A sites, but, while it can be educational, it’s not geared towards those in school. That’s why Sallie Severns (a former Answers.com executive) founded and launched Answer Underground — a learning utility and mobile app that it designed to help students share info and get fast answers through group Q&A.

4 Ideas for Better Social Media Measurement

See on Scoop.it - Business Futures

Although the social space has rapidly matured over the last decade-plus, social media measurement remains a mystery for many.
This mystery is due to two main factors. One is the fact that understanding off-site social activity, where marketers lack a data set as robust as they receive on their own website, is a challenge. The other is that despite social media itself not being new, it’s still an emerging (and fragmented) marketing channel and frequently lacks clear objectives/conversion goals from brands.

Is 'Improved' Vaccine Causing Whooping Cough Outbreaks?

See on Scoop.it - Healthcare Professionals

A change in vaccine composition may partly explain current whooping cough outbreaks in the United States and Australia, researchers say.

In the 1990s, a switch was made from diphtheria-tetanus-whole cell pertussis (DTwP) vaccine to diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTaP) vaccine to reduce side effects. It’s possible that the newer vaccine is less effective and wears off faster, Australian researchers suggest.

Positive Workplace Psychology Permeates the Community ...

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Professionals

A number of studies have shown that a workplace promoting positive psychology among employees and clients can increase innovation, loyalty and pride among those who work with the organization. The goodwill promoted when companies focus on their human capital as opposed to the cold, impersonal bottom line often creates conditions that allow businesses to grow profits and thrive for the long term. However, the scope of a company’s socially conscious efforts can reach much further than the office walls. The positive effects of corporate social responsibility can often ripple throughout a community, impacting interaction between neighbors and human interaction with the natural environment.
