The Most Thorough Summary (to date) of MOOC Completion Rates -
This is the most thorough summary of MOOC completion rate data that I have seen – for xMOOCs. Kudos to Katy for putting together this data, and please comment on her blog post to let her know of new data available.
The problem I see is that scalar metrics of # of students and completion rates are insufficient for open courses, where there are different student types. Only a subset of students actually plan to complete a course, whereas the majority of students enrolled are there only to sample and explore. Measuring completion rate off the total number of students is misleading, but so is touting the total number of students enrolled (billions served) as a key metric.

Researchers spot attention deficits in babies who later develop autism
Researchers at Yale School of Medicine are able to detect deficits in social attention in infants as young as six months of age who later develop Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
“This study highlights the possibility of identifying certain features linked to visual attention that can be used for pinpointing infants at greatest risk for ASD in the first year of life,” said Chawarska. “This could make earlier interventions and treatments possible.”

Video-How Youth Learn: A Ned Talk
“If you’re a teenage speaker brought in to address a crowd of teachers on the subject of how you and your peers learn best … what are you going to say? “I — have no clue,” Ned Cephalus nervously says from behind the podium. “I’m just a very average teenage brain”—complete with backpack, zits, and a journal he keeps about school. Yet in this funny and fast-paced “NED talk,” Ned knocks out eight powerful conditions of learning that can change everything for students.”

Sustainable development of China's electronic information industry: Green challenges and solutions
China’s electronic information industry has quickly become an essential part of the country’s national economy. However, pollution and environmental challenges emerge at different stages throughout the lifecycle of information and communication technology (ICT) products, from their design, development, manufacturing to use and disposal. Evidence shows that little effort has been made to address these challenges and environmental issues have not received much attention from industrial manufacturers or the users of ICT products. This paper discusses and highlights the importance and impacts of current environmental challenges faced by the electronic information industry in China. It proposes the implementation of green ICT as a key strategy to ensure environmentally friendly use of ICT equipment to maintain sustainable development of this industry in the long-term.

Why We Tell Lies at Work
It’s a common observation that the lies and the coverup, not the initial misbehavior, are what take public figures down. You heard it during Watergate and the Lewinsky scandal, and last month, Lance Armstrong proved it all over again.
The rest of us may not confess to Oprah, but to varying degrees we’ve all bent the truth in our careers.

14 Ways To Store And Share Files On The iPad
iPads are neat little devices that can pretty much do it all: play music, support interactive content, reshape how we think of textbooks, produce high-quality videos, and even take a step back and function as a good old-fashioned typewriter.
The iPad does, however, have its share of flaws ranging from those hardware related (proprietary connections that work with Apple and only Apple products), to software (if you want an iPad, you must go through iTunes). And one of the educators’ biggest gripes with the iPad is its lack of storage space.

Brave New World of Prenatal DNA Sequencing
Companies count DNA sequences in the blood of high-risk moms to test for Down syndrome and other large-scale disruptions, but they could do more.
Medical experts are also taking note of the burgeoning field. In November, two medical societies released a joint opinion that the noninvasive DNA tests could be used to screen high-risk pregnancies, which include cases where the mother is over 35 or has had previous pregnancies with chromosome abnormalities.
