Doctors to repair Malala's skull

Doctors describe the procedure to repair a missing area of the skull of Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, who was shot.




Adam Atodl’s insight:


The first procedure will involve drilling into her skull and inserting a custom-made metal plate.


Doctors said Malala had been left completely deaf in her left ear when she was shot at point-blank range.


The second procedure will involve fitting a small electronic device that provides a sense of sound to someone who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing.

Future Mars Colony Nabs Its First Investors

Mars One says it has secured “a few million” in funding for a future human settlement on the Red Planet. The private Netherlands-based venture aims to send at least six groups of four people on a one-way mission to Mars in 2023.

This initial round of funding will partly finance Mars One’s Astronaut Selection program, a process that calls on any applicant that’s over the age of 18 and willing to spend eight to 10 years in training before living out the rest of his or her life on Mars. This entire process will be televised, and the audience will select the astronauts that will become part of the first Red Planet colony.

Free schools site rules to change

Changes to planning rules in England will make it easier for new free schools to open in offices, hotels and shops from this summer, the government has confirmed.

Free schools are funded by central government but can be set up by various groups, including charities, parents and businesses, where they can show a need for a new school. They cannot be run for profit.


There are about 80 free schools open in England now, with another 100 planned to open in September.
