Stem cells being made from blood

See on Scoop.it - Healthcare Professionals

A patient’s own blood has been used to make personalised stem cells, which doctors hope can be used to treat a range of diseases.

The team at the University of Cambridge says this could be one of the easiest and safest sources of stem cells.

In a study, published in the journal Stem Cells: Translational Medicine, the cells were used to build blood vessels.

However, experts cautioned that the safety of using such stem cells was still unclear.

Stem cells are one of the great hopes of medical research. They can transform into any other type of cell the body is built from - so they should be able to repair everything from the brain to the heart, and eyes to bone.

Learning Real Life Lessons in the Virtual World

How does a virtual world carry over into kids’ real life? Contributor Rebecca Levey has tips that can help.

“Here’s a news flash: your child is most likely going to online places he or she shouldn’t. Like my daughter. She ended up as a scantily clad avatar dancing with a virtual man in leather pants in a virtual club in a virtual world. Only when her virtual dance partner asked her to remove her virtual top (an action, by the way, the site does not allow) did she tell me where she had been. Why did she tell me? Because she was freaked out and afraid. But also because I’ve made it OK for her to tell me about her online activities.”

4D Recordings Show Unborn Babies Yawning In The Womb

See on Scoop.it - Healthcare Professionals

Researchers from the the University of Durham have captured fetuses yawning in the womb using 4D ultrasound scans. 4D is the term for a 3D image of the fetus moving in real-time.

For a long time, some scientists have argued that fetuses simply open their mouth and do not yawn.

With these new scans, British researchers say they can tell the difference, and that more than half of the 15 fetuses recorded on video were yawning. Yawning, in turn, provides clues about the health of an unborn baby.

REACH to Rewire your Brain

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Professionals

Until recent years, the story of your brain was pretty discouraging. When I was getting my degree in Cognitive Science in the 1980s, I was told what you may have heard: you are born with billions of brain cells. Your brain sets like concrete as you become an adult. Neurons die throughout your lifetime, and then you die. So suck it up!

Brain wiring

Neuroscience is rewriting the story of your brain to be much more encouraging. Neuroplasticity is your brain’s ability to rewire and restructure itself due to learning and experience. Few scientists believed in neuroplasticity until recent years. Now the consensus is clear: under the right circumstances your brain physically and significantly changes throughout your life.

Monitor Your Diabetes Using These Digital Tools

See on Scoop.it - Healthcare Professionals

Diabetes is a chronic condition that results from defects in insulin production, insulin action or both. There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 usually occurs before the age of 20 and is a result of the pancreas no longer making insulin. This type of diabetes requires taking insulin and possibly other medication. Type 2 diabetes, often called adult onset diabetes, is the most common form of diabetes and can be controlled with proper diet, medication and exercise.

The National Diabetes Education Program, through the National Institutes of Health, points out that you may know what to do to manage your diabetes, but putting those steps into action in your daily life can take some work.

Having a smartphone might make monitoring your glucose numbers and carbohydrates throughout the day a bit easier. Don’t have a smartphone? There are a number of web tools, too.
